I once heard a well known speaker at a Christian conference proudly proclaim that the best way to effectively teach children is through a story. It turns out that this particular speaker makes her living by writing stories for children. Big surprise.
Have you ever noticed that it’s next to impossible to successfully eat a slab of meat with a spoon? You need a fork and a knife so you can cut it up, stab it, and chew for a while.
Is it easy to read a children’s story to your children each night? Absolutely. They can be a great resource. However, as good as some of them are, those stories aren’t Scripture. Children’s pastors, parents, children’s ministry volunteers - we shouldn’t neglect our duty to put meat on the table consistently. Will it take more work to cut, stab, and chew on the meat of God’s Word? Without a doubt. But let’s face it, we’ve been spoon feeding our children little fluffy marshmallows too often. Scripture is from God. Model a high view of it and we give glory to the One who gave it to us.
