We decided to do a Vacation Bible School curriculum for the same reason we decided to make music for kids. There was a need and we felt like we were in a place to help solve a problem.
With kids music the problem was that most of it was terrible. It was poorly produced, poorly written, and just plain annoying to parents. Everybody knew it but nobody was doing anything about it. Parents and children's pastors had to use what was out there and they were the happiest people of all when we offered them a better option.
With Vacation Bible School the problem is that publishers have forgotten why Vacation Bible School exists. They've forgotten why churches started doing it in the first place. They mean well, but they've gotten seriously sidetracked.
Well meaning children's pastors, with no good options, have followed along and now church after church is considering dropping Vacation Bible School altogether! I don't blame them. They're tired of being told they have to outdo last year's program year after year. They're tired of putting their time and resources into something that hasn't had great results thanks to watered down curriculum. They want to quit and it's not because they don't want to share Christ with kids. It's because Vacation Bible School has turned into VBS. The Bible verses have been exchanged for Bible "points". The gospel has been watered down so that no one could possibly be offended. That's good for sales but bad for theology. Kids are having fun but most kids are leaving the church a few years later. The problem is not Vacation Bible School itself, but the way we do it. The definition of going crazy is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.
Children's pastors: please don't give up! It doesn't have to be so hard. It's not rocket science. Bible teaching, singing, games, crafts, and snacks...kids love it! Unchurched kids are walking into your church...it's worth the extra effort to convert a lame curriculum into a Bible based one. It's worth trying to write your own. It's worth the work to love these kids enough to share the gospel with them. Please don't quit. Please don't give up on vacation BIBLE school.
Why am I writing this? Because in the past few weeks I've read way too many tweets, posts, and emails from children's pastors who just want to get rid of Vacation Bible School and that's not the solution. It would be a shame to let a bad method result in losing a good thing.
By the way, I'm not saying our curriculum is the answer to your problems. We're not trying to take over the publishing world. We're just trying to do our part to help turn the tide. There are a lot of you out there who are sick of the hype and want to get back to substance. We want to encourage you to keep going. There are kids and families out there who are lost and desperately need the Savior. Don't let a misguided industry steal the true joy and purpose from Vacation Bible School. If you want to quit, please do me a favor...email me first. gofishblog@mac.com
