Monkeys and Ears

Yesterday Jason and I spent twelve hours recording with our pal and co-producer Darren Rust at his studio here in Minnesota.  Can I just say that I love my job?

We are working on the new "Party Like A Pre-Schooler" CD and we had an absolute blast.  We worked on the songs Do Your Ears Hang Low and Five Little Monkeys.  I am thrilled by the creativity that was flowing.  I truly believe that this will be one of the most surprisingly innovative Go Fish projects yet.  To take pre-school songs, make them cool, and stay true to our mission of not driving parents bonkers is definitely going to be a challenge.  However, so far we are surpassing my expectations by leaps and bounds!

Do Your Ears Hang Low we did in a disco style that you can't help but "get down" to.  Five Little Monkeys has a bit of a 70s/early 80s funk vibe to it.  It gives me great joy to imagine parents popping this in and going "This is Do Your Ears Hang Low?  No way!"

What I love about this project is that it's full of songs everybody knows, but done in a way NEVER done before.  I'll keep you updated as the album progresses.  It's killing me that I can't show you anything yet!!!

Are You Good Enough?

New Go Fish CD For MOPS Convention!

We are busy working on a CD right now that I think a lot of you are going to be excited about.  We are releasing it at the MOPS Convention (Mothers Of Pre-Schoolers) this October in Dallas, TX.  It's a new series of recordings that will be targeted at our younger audience and I am having a blast working on it.

The album is going to be called PARTY LIKE A PRE-SCHOOLER (Volume 1) and will include funky Go Fish versions of songs like Five Little Monkeys, Do Your Ears Hang Low, and Old MacDonald Had A Farm.  It is turning out to be quite hilarious and I think it will offer a fresh alternative to what's out there now.

Our hope is that this will be a great way to introduce Go Fish music to a whole new audience.  (daycares, pre-schools, etc.)

This will also be a perfect option for all of the public school teachers out there who love our music but would get in trouble if they played songs like The Ten Commandment Boogie in their classroom.  Stay tuned as I'll post clips of these songs as we finish them.  Trust me...no matter what age you are, you will get a kick out of this new album!  It's time to party like a pre-schooler baby!

By the way, for those of you who have no pre-school connections...don't worry.  The next full-blown Go Fish release will be coming out in the fall of 2009 and will be called "Kickin' It Old School".  We're already working on ideas for it and it is going to be slammin'!

Real Men

Last week we had a concert in Tucson, AZ.  Right away I noticed this hanging on the wall in the church lobby.  I was a bit offended until someone told me the poster next to ours was promoting an upcoming men's retreat!

A girl at the church drew us a picture as well.  Pretty good, huh?  If only we looked this good for real!

Put On Your Armor

As a songwriter, every once in a while you come up with a line that makes you go "Oh yeah, that's a good one."  I wish it happened more often (and without so much work)!!

On the new SNAZZY cd we have a song called Gotta Move.  Lyrically, it's one of my favorites and it contains by far my favorite line on the whole project.  The song is about evangelism and how timid so many have gotten in the church when it comes to sharing their faith.  The line is this:

Trying to sensitive has got us in a mess.  Put on your armor and take one in the chest!

We get a lot of feedback via email, comments at our shows, letters, etc.  I haven't had anyone comment on that line which has surprised me.  (And believe me, songwriters notice these things!!)  Last week I got an email from a Children's Pastor we just did a concert for out in California.  Here's a little piece of it:

One quick story....your song lyrics - "trying to be sensitive has got us in a mess, put on your armor and take one in the chest" has totally gotten to me personally.  So much so, that at the gym (of all places) I was in the hot tub (of all places!) listening to a woman talk about the sad state of her life; the words of that song kept "haunting" me, so I ended up talking, sharing about Jesus, and praying for her right in the hot tub.  God is using your music in big kids too!

Boy did that ever make my day.  Ironically, last weekend in Texas the promoter told me that she had been using "a certain line" from one of our songs when she goes out and speaks to women's groups.  It was driving me crazy so I had to ask...what line?  You guessed it.

People are so hungry for the truth found ONLY in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Don't be afraid to put on your armor and take one in the chest today.  As Christians, we are commanded to do so.  If that's not reason enough, take it from me...there is no greater joy than when you see someone respond to the gospel.  It will fire you up like nothing else I PROMISE!

What A Week!

Whew...that's all I have to say!  Last week we did two shows in Iowa, one in Arizona, one back up in Wisconsin and then down south in Texas to finish up.  Once again, I am truly amazed at what is happening to the Go Fish Guys lately.  It used to be that unless we were in MN, SD, WI or IA nobody had a clue who we were.  I can honestly say that our shows in places like Texas, Maryland, and Arizona are getting to be crazier than our shows back in the Midwest!

It is clear that parents and kids are helping to spread the word and for that we THANK YOU!!!  I love the fact that we get to make music that we love for the people we love and somehow, when it's all said and done, parents and kids are thanking us?!?  It's truly a privilege to make music for you guys and get to share the gospel at the same time.  You all encourage us more than you know.  Weeks like this remind me that God has answered my prayers in a big way.  To see little kids all over the country singing our songs is amazing and we will never take for granted the fact that you allow us to play such a big part in the lives of your little ones!

Many Ways to Heaven? Try That On Judgement Day!

I came across this article today.  I hope you'll take the time to read it.  Two things came to mind after reading it for me.

1.  People are STARVING for the truth!
2.  True Christians need to keep sharing their faith.  From the looks of it, the best place to start is at church!!!

Christmas, Web Site, and Happy Songs

I often get asked "What do you do when you're not doing shows?".  So, for all 2 of you who may be curious...here you go!

I've been spending a lot of time preparing for Christmas lately.  I'm not going to lie to you, it's challenging to think about Christmas when summer is just getting started!

I was down in Nashville a few weeks ago meeting with various Christian bookstore chains at the Word Entertainment office.  The meetings were mainly to make sure they didn't forget about our "Snow" cd this Christmas season.  I also worked with them to figure out creative ways to use the popularity of our Christmas album to encourage customers to consider our kids projects for  gifts.  Along with working on the retail side of things, we've been finalizing details for our Christmas tour this year as well.

Last year we didn't do any Christmas shows so we're excited to put together our best Christmas tour yet!  SInce the "Christmas With A Capital C" song went so nuts last year, I think we will get a lot of people to our show that have never seen us at Christmas time before which will be great!  We're calling it the "Christmas WIth A Capital C Tour" and marketing it as a "politically incorrect" Christmas show.  Because the youtube video is well over 7 million views, we're anticipating a lot of mainstream media coverage.  So I've been diligently trying to memorize lots of scripture for "ammo" during the interviews.  It's all about the fishing and we need to be prepared!

Andy is almost finished with our new web site.  It should be launching in a few short weeks which is very exciting.  It's a big step up from our current site and the new online store is sweet!

As part of this, we just recorded our version of "If You're Happy" that we've been performing at our shows for years but never recorded.  We will be sending it out to our current email list and when our new site launches, anyone who subscribes to our email list will receive it for free as our way of thanking them.  It turned out great and you and your kiddos will love it!

Oh yeah...we have lots of shows this month.  Hopefully we'll see tons of you there.  Jason seems to be more entertaining than usual lately so you don't want to miss out on that!!
